Mirror Mirror On the Wall
When I was growing up, I used to watch every Miss America pageant. I would cuddle up in the living room and pretend that my turn would come. After each pageant, I remember looking in the mirror and wondering if I would ever grow up to be pretty. My favorite song, at the ripe old age of three, was Doris Day’s “Qui Sera Sera” where she too asked if she would be pretty. As the years passed, the cold reality finally sank in that my height would never elevate me beyond 5 ft.2 inches, nor would my features qualify me for international beauty and fame.
I have heard that beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. As much as I would like to believe this to be true, we cannot deny that makeup enhances most faces. Even when we strive for a natural look, we can play up our features. If you are blessed with good skin, that’s great. But as we get better in life, (I never like to think of getting older), there are techniques that can enhance or camouflage certain features. It’s not so much about looking made up but rather about projecting a fresh look that is pleasing to the eye.
When I was eight years old, my mother worked for Elizabeth Arden at a major department store. I remember watching my mother in action. She would diplomatically tell customers who resisted makeup that it was not for them alone. She jolted many a customer into purchasing makeup by explaining that you do it for your coworkers. After all, she explained, they have to look at your face all day.
We resist makeup based on many self-imposed excuses, such as lack of time or money, or not knowing how to apply it properly. This website is designed to make your life easier and to provide you with tips to:
- Camouflage imperfections
- Showcase the best of who you are
- Build confidence by knowing you are capitalizing on your best feature
- Present yourself as someone who is aging gracefully
- Enhance self-esteem by taking care of your most visible feature…your face
The investment you put into smart choices will pay off handsomely. You will be seen as someone who takes pride in her image and manages positive first impressions. I don’t see makeup as a mask to mislead others but rather as a tool to consistently look your best. Isn’t it time to spoil yourself?
Makeup shopping can be hazardous. Although you have read outstanding reviews of certain products, they may not serve your skin type or age. You need to know which products work for the age of your skin. Misleading advertising campaigns try to convince you that there are miracle products.
I don’t believe that using a specific product will take ten years off my looks. I don’t believe I will ever look like Catherine Zeta Jones if I use Estee Lauder’s line. I don’t believe that wrinkles ever stop coming. But I do believe that making educated choices, learning effective application techniques, nurturing our skin with high quality moisturizers, and eating healthily, all contribute to our staying power and to looking wonderful.
A message from Roz
Looking Good for Personal Power
Our generation is preoccupied with looking younger. The Rosalind Collection is for working women who choose to define their personal power. For those of you who know me, you understand that I have definite ideas on visual appearance.
In 1990 I began my business called “Signature Style” for men and women, guiding them to “dress for success.” My previous career was in fashion – Club Monaco, Harry Rosen and Polo Ralph Lauren. I’ve lived and breathed fashion, and now have the privilege of guiding you in making the best of your looks.
Do you still believe that looking good is superficial? Here’s another point of view. I hope to inspire you to capitalize on your visual presence, not because I say so, but because it will make you feel proud and bring you added success.
Looking your best is about personal and financial survival. We’re a generation of women assuming significant roles in the business world. We don’t need to justify putting our kids in daycare, choosing to be single, or wanting to get ahead.
We no longer work to supplement our spouses’ salary or out of necessity, but because we are ambitious. We may even earn significantly more than our male counterparts. We love being independent, and are proud of enjoying designer clothes and spa days. Our generation demands fulfillment, recognition and rewards.
It’s important to acknowledge that looking good is critical to keeping our jobs and to getting promoted. Job security no longer exists, so the more we promote the best of who we are, the more marketable we become.
Let’s not fool ourselves. Studies on attractiveness show that people who are younger, slimmer and better looking are more likely to succeed in the corporate arena than those who believe in the adage “hard work speaks for itself.
Is perception reality or is reality perception? You may believe that people should look beyond the surface, but the reality is that the world works differently. People believe what they see. If you allow yourself to look old, people assume that your ideas are antiquated as well. They also assume that you are probably risk adverse and boring. This sounds so unfair, but perception truly becomes people’s reality.
In the last five years, I have acknowledged that I am probably older than most of the CEO’s I work with. Whenever I tell people my age, (selectively, with caution) people are shocked to hear that I’m 57. They say, “Oh, what’s your secret?” “I would never believe it.” “You look too young to have a 32 year old son.” “I wish I had your genes!” After hearing these frequent comments, I decided to just laugh it off, and created the tag line, “Oh, I’m just immature for my age.”
Personally, I have no problem telling people my age. What has surprised me the most is that we stereotype people after 40. I don’t know how I am supposed to look or behave at 40, 50 or 60. But the real challenge is that if I am seen as the exception to the rule, what does that say about women who do look their age? What impression do they make at work?
Keeping a hairstyle from your college years may have served you then. Now it probably makes you look matronly. Superficial or not, we attribute positive qualities such as kindness, sincerity and intelligence to people who look young and hip. Why let yourself look old unnecessarily?
We have only one life to live. Stop complaining that you don’t have time to take care of your looks. If you aren’t getting the promotion, the raise, or the business you want, someone has stolen your opportunity.
There are no age boundaries to taking care of yourself. Celebrate your beauty. You deserve to look and be your best.
Mission of the Rosalind Collection®
My mission in life is to help women of all ages tap into their personal power, showcase their brilliance and command the recognition they deserve. The Rosalind Collection® was born with the vision of helping you minimize imperfections and highlight your best features. Besides, aren’t perfectionists boring? Spoil yourself. Ask for what you want. Stop worrying about what others say. Invest in yourself. You are worth the time. You have one face. Stop comparing yourself to others. Once you acknowledge your beauty (inside and out), you will be giving yourself the most precious gift in life – the ability to freely love yourself.
Real freedom means the right to be your authentic self.
It’s the freedom to live your life with passion, excitement and choices.
It’s the freedom to dream big and live with magnificence.
Blessings,
