AGELESS by Jennifer Marcello

Recently a leading fashion magazine released their annual “age” issue or “ageless” as they touted it on the cover. I’ve always looked forward to this issue because as a 55 year old woman it’s something I can relate to. For once they are talking to me. There were articles about John McCain’s beautiful 96 year old mother, Mia Farrow who in her 60’s is a social activist advocating for the world’s children and a couple of other beautiful women of a certain age. Wonderful! But flipping through from story to story I found one article by a woman who hates her armpits (!) and wants to have them surgically improved (what on earth was she talking about?), and another about cosmetic surgery to remove wrinkles from the knees. I was shocked, outraged, dumbfounded insulted and saddened all at the same time. In spite of articles honoring these older women the message still seems to be about what new body part we as women can learn to loathe and want to change somehow. We now, it seems, desire to change everything about our bodies from our toes to our vaginas to our breasts to our faces. Is there no frontier left unexplored for which cosmetic surgeons are only too happy to find a “fix”?

Why shouldn’t we love ourselves as we are? What kind of inner strength does it require to resist the messages sold to us via the very media that are supposedly for us? Self acceptance allows us to more fully embrace those around us. Aging with grace and joy allows us mental time and space to look out beyond ourselves and engage with the world and give something back.

I’m all for taking really, really good care of ourselves; nurturing our bodies with good food (and enjoying it!) protecting our skin from too much sun exposure, enjoying facials, a good cut and color, a mani-pedi to stay well groomed, exercising and respecting  and taking responsibility for the only body we have. Let’s learn to dress our bodies in the most flattering way for our body type and age (Reality check: If your knees are that wrinkled maybe it’s natures way of saying it would be more age-appropriate to wear a skirt just below the knee). And let’s pursue that elusive state of grace in which we find peace within ourselves and generosity towards others in our lives.

Let’s spend less time looking in the mirror and more time looking into our hearts. That is where the true ageless beauty resides.
