ADear Roz:
I’m middle aged and was told that I should use less makeup.  I enjoy makeup and feel naked without it.
What should I do?
Chicago, IL

qDear Chicago:
Makeup helps you to express your identity.  You can still experiment with the latest shades, textures and combinations.  As you age, your makeup should be simpler. Focus on wearing the basics and leave the trendy stuff for the younger generation. You don’t have to look plain but focus on looking tasteful and fresh.  Opt for less drama.  Focus on your best feature which is usually the eyes because they express who you are, rather than trying to make everything stand out.

ADear Roz:
I’ve been told that my look is outdated? I have very little time to put makeup on, let alone experiment with new looks.
Palo Alto, CA

qDear Palo Alto:
If you are looking for a fresh look that is ageless, stay away from looks that date you. Examples would be the cat look on your eyes, thick or painted on eyebrows, caked foundation, thick fake eyelashes, dark blush or iridescent shadow. Opt for subtle and natural looks. Wear subtle lip colors or gloss. Wear neutrals such as a plum brown or a sage gray on your eyes. Curl your lashes and coat them with mascara for impact. You don’t have to look boring but you can also add interest to your look with your accessories or hairstyle. Add sparkle in your earrings but keep your makeup balanced and soft.

ADear Roz:
I have a ruddy complexion with dark circles. I use a concealer on my cheeks and under my eyes but it either disappears mid day or I look like I have racoon eyes. What do I use for camouflage?
London, UK

qDear London:
First of all, you want to first use a foundation to even out the skin tone. Then when you add your concealer, you want to blend it well. Putting concealer directly on the skin will show up immediately. It will not camouflage but rather bring attention to those areas you want to diminish. Choose a foundation that disappears into your skin. Remember that coverage can conceal and compliment at the same time. It must give off a natural look. Go for our natural looking powder foundation and see how easy it is to look lovely. Follow with concealer and blush. Link into “smart tips” on how to apply concealer and foundation.

ARoz, how important is moisturizer? Winters can be brutal.
Montreal, Que.

qDear Montreal:
See moisturizer as an investment. You shouldn’t leave home without it. Before you apply anything to your face, you want to invest in an excellent moisturizer. When applying moisturizer directly to a freshly washed face, it evens the skin’s porosity and allows the foundation to be blended evenly. Remember to use a richer moisturizer for night. Don’t forget your eyes as they are the first place to show your age. Invest in a moisturizer made for eyes. You can also reduce shadows underneath the eye when you purchase eye moisturizers designed specifically for this area. You may not know this but you will want to purchase a richer moisturizer for winter when you are indoors exposed to heating and reduced fresh air.

A Hi Roz:
My eyebrows are graying. I have tried using brown pencil but have not been able to cover the gray. And plucking the hairs is futile as they grow back. Help!
New York, NY

qDear New York:
I suggest that you tint your eyebrows. It’s an easy remedy for graying or lightening brows. This is also applicable to those who are allergic to mascara. So you can have the best of both worlds.

ADear Roz:
In the summer, I play tennis and have a natural tan. How dangerous is a little sun? And do you have any suggestions for getting rid of my pasty look during winter?
Denver, CO

qDear Denver:
I don’t want to scare you but exposure to UV rays can permanently damage your skin in addition to being extremely damaging to your health. When you are going to be outdoors (even on cloudy days), use a sunscreen with at least SPF 30 on your face and at least SPF 15 on any other exposed body part. Remember to apply sunscreen to your hands (to avoid brown spots in the future) also. Reapply sunscreen throughout the day. Limit your exposure between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 a.m. when the sun is the strongest. Wear a hat and sunglasses. To get rid of the pasty look, invest in a self-tanner or bronzer on your face, but make it subtle. A common mistake is to apply the self-tanner only to your face however. Do your face, neck and arms so that they are all the same color. Find a great tanning spray for your legs if you wear shorts or skirts.

ADear Roz:
Lipstick bleeds on me frequently. Are there any tips for putting color on my lips without bleeding?
Toronto, Ont.

qDear Toronto:
Generally darker colors will be more visible so if this is a frequent problem, stay away from deep colors like red or burgundy to eliminate color seeping into lip lines. You have two choices – lipstick or gloss. Lipstick obviously will stay longer than gloss but may bleed easier into the lines. Gloss catches the light, making your lips look plumper and therefore younger. Yes, it has to be applied more frequently but may be worth the effort. See smart tips on lipstick for more info.

My lips are thin. What can I do to make them look fuller?
Washington, DC

qDear Washington:
If you are using lipstick, add one dot of gloss in the center of your bottom lip to give the illusion of plumpness. Using a softer color like pink or soft brown will make your lips look bigger. Do not draw one continuous line circling your entire mouth. Instead, draw broken lines. See smart tips on lipstick for more info.
