SMART TIPS

You are a work of art.
Create the canvas for your beautiful look.

Priming The Canvas

I used to study fine arts at university. One of the first lessons you learn is how to prepare a canvas before painting. You would never put acrylic or oil paint directly onto a canvas without first whitewashing the canvas to prime it.

The same concept holds true for your face. Preparing your skin with a primer helps your foundation go on more smoothly. It ensures that it lasts longer and gives it a far better finish.

I personally swear by our primer. It works even in the Florida heat. If you fly extensively as I do, you’ll see that your foundation is intact at midnight. As I travel at least four days a week, I’m living proof that this primer is amazing.

The benefit of a primer is that it prevents makeup from being absorbed into your pores. It smoothes out the bumpy parts of your skin. And it makes it so much easier to apply brow powder.

Tips

  • Use your primer after your moisturizer and before your foundation.
  • Use the primer before applying eyeshadow. This will prevent eye shadow from melting away. Again, it smoothes the surface for easier application of the shadow.
  • You can apply primer with a foundation brush. But you can also apply it easily with your fingers, which I prefer.

Powder Foundation

Do you know someone like my Aunt Anne? She was my favorite aunt when I was growing up. I remember that she used to wear her foundation so thick that she always looked pasty, and it ended abruptly on her jawline. My cousins and I often discussed how unfortunate Aunt Anne was to be born with two different skins. The problem was twofold: application and choice of color.

Color and application are critical to a natural-looking foundation. You can easily look natural and have a flawless finish by switching to powder foundation. Today, there’s no excuse for looking aged or blotchy. Remember that the application is the most important element. Try our powder foundation, which includes the handy built in applicator brush. This makes it simple to apply and reapply throughout the day. You will look natural, and appreciate the time you save with this one-step application. And it doesn’t absorb into the skin, so it creates a barrier that locks in moisture and makes your skin look radiant.

Tips

  • Switch to powder foundation.
  • As always, moisturize your face before using powder.
  • Then apply our primer to help distribute the foundation evenly.
  • Dust on the powder foundation.
  • After 40 Skin: Avoid layering your lids with foundation and powder. It’s messy and exaggerates any wrinkles you have.

Hi-Definition Foundation

The hottest trend in the TV and film industry, this creamy foundation is in high demand. Created to hide the pores and surface imperfections that HD media captures, the sheer reflective finish makes Hi- Definition Foundation perfect to use every day. It fills in fine lines and neutralizes redness to give you flawless results. You get exactly the coverage you want, from sheer to full, depending on the amount you use. The formula slips on like a second skin, and never feels cakey or heavy. Your skin feels refreshed and revitalized, and the color stays consistent all day. Shake well.

Apply smoothly and evenly with foundation brush, small sponge or fingertips.
Pat with fingertips to finish.

Concealer

Throughout my life, I have battled dark circles. Trying to sleep longer has never eliminated this problem. As a night owl, I gave up trying to go to bed earlier a long time ago. I now swear by the best invention for cover up – concealer.

Most women are born or will inherit distinguishing circles under the eyes, whether from overworking, partying or advancing in age. A concealer is one of our best friends. However, it can be our worst enemy if we walk around looking like a distant relative of Rocky Raccoon.

Concealer is your skin’s secret weapon. It camouflages imperfections, defies dark circles, hides redness and banishes the appearance of aging. Just keep it hidden. Your perfect shade should always be invisible.

Tips

  • Avoid wearing concealer that is too light, thick, cakey or just plain obvious. Concealer can exaggerate wrinkles.
  • Don’t test concealer on your wrist. Apply to your jaw line to see how it works with your complexion.
  • To really see if concealer works, try it at the end of the day when your shadows are more visible.
  • Your perfect shade should fade into your skin or be slightly lighter.
  • If you can’t find a match, try blending two shades of concealer to get the exact shade you need.
  • Consider the color of the circles you want to cover:
    • If the area under your eyes looks brownish or purple, choose a concealer with a touch of yellow.
    • If the area under your eyes looks gray, use a concealer that’s more beige or rosy.
  • Here are some tips for application:
    • If you skipped foundation, be sure to use concealer around your nostrils where your skin may be red. Blend well by patting the area lightly to remove any telltale traces.
    • Build coverage if necessary. For more coverage, lightly apply one additional layer at a time to avoid cakey buildup.
    • Use concealer after foundation to prevent it from rubbing off. If you don’t wear foundation, apply concealer before you apply blush and powder.
  • Put a light dab directly on any imperfections and repeat if necessary to build coverage.

Blush

Foundation counts. Concealer counts. So does blush. I look at blush as the icing on the cake. You can have a delicious cake but think about how much more appealing it becomes when you add some decorative features.

Blush, if used properly, gives you a healthy outdoor look. The key is to choose the right color and apply it properly. Use powder instead of cream blusher. Your makeup will last until supper time. I tried cream blusher but found that the color faded several hours later.

I switched to powder because, like many of you, I have so little time to even look at myself in the mirror during the day. I can justify reapplying lipstick, but blush always seems too high maintenance.

Tips

  • Don’t forget that when using powder, you must moisturize your face.
  • Don’t use blush combined with contouring powder to sculpt cheekbones. The effect will be completely fake.
  • Strive for natural-looking blush, which will make you look younger and fresher.
  • If you are fair skinned, go with a pale, rosy pink.
  • If you are medium skinned, choose a blush that is more coral or peach.
  • If you are dark skinned, try brownish orange.
  • For any skin tone, you should make sure your blush and lipstick are from the same color family. Peach blush doesn’t compliment fuchsia lips.
  • For all skin tones, a lighter blush on the apples of your cheeks gives a natural glow.
  • Never use blush as a substitute for an eyeshadow.
  • Invest in a quality brush that is angled for easier application. Throw out those free little brushes that come in a compact. They don’t distribute color evenly. Don’t skimp on spending money for a brush. It will determine how natural your blush appears.

Eyebrow Shadow

When I was studying Fine Arts at university, my professor used to stress the importance of the right picture frame for enhancing the beauty of a fine oil painting. Have you ever seen a magnificent piece of art ruined by a gaudy or tacky frame? As a comparison, eyebrows can accent or detract from your total package.

Your eyebrows frame your eyes. Take the time to groom your brows. If you are uncomfortable shaping your brows by yourself, get expert help for waxing, plucking or threading. However, like most things, you have to maintain the work.

Eyebrows have been described as a “face-lift” without surgery. Eyebrows don’t receive much attention, but they showcase your face. They accent your beauty and help define your character. I doubt that anyone will ever compliment you on your brows, but well-groomed brows can make your whole face appear lifted. Remember that as you age, your eyebrows thin out. Be cautious when plucking above your eyebrows as they define your shape, and don’t always grow back. The following tips will help you create lovely brows.

Tips:

  • Your brow must fit your face. Be careful of off-the-shelf brow stencils. Although the shapes look attractive, they may not be flattering to your shape. Get advice from experts if you aren’t sure what shape works for you.
  • Full brows look best on a broad forehead with deep-set eyes and a delicate face.
  • Seek proportion in the shape. Brows that are not too thin or too thick will flatter most faces.
  • For a youthful look, shape your brow with an arch if possible. The arch curves slightly upward and then descends down and out. Extending your brow up and out will lift your face.
  • Avoid brows that are too rounded. They will make you look like a clown.
  • Avoid making brows too heavy in the inner corner or too thin at the end.
  • Put a highlighter under the brow bone to increase the illusion of an arch.
  • Always use our primer all over your face, particularly over your eyebrows. Your brow shadow will go on smoother and look much more natural.
  • Put your eyebrow pencil to bed unless you need it as a backup. Go for the powdered brow look for a softer, more flattering look.
  • Invest in a quality brow brush that is angled for easier application.
  • Trim heavy brows: use an eyebrow brush to sweep hairs upward. Use a small brow scissors to trim any hairs that extend beyond where you want your brows to end.
  • If you dye your hair, color your brows as well.
Blondes: a shade darker than your hair
Brunettes: same shade or a shade lighter
Redheads: same shade or darker
  • If you have grey or white hairs, use a brow pencil, brow powder or customized mascara products for hair color. There is no need to pluck just because they are not your hair color. Alternatively, have your brows tinted professionally.
  • Use brow powder to fill in bare patches. Avoid mismatched colors.
  • You may need a darker color for the bare patches, so buy two shades for blending.
  • Invest in our duo shadow to insure a natural, attractive look.

Tweezing

  • Avoid: tweezed-too-thin brows, drawn-on brows, shapeless brows, Brooke Shields’ bushy ‘80’s brows, and permanently tattooed brows.
  • Invest in good quality, sharp tweezers.
  • Tweezers with slanted tips are especially designed for grabbing hairs without pulling at the skin.
  • Always pull in the direction of your hair growth.
  • Tweeze after your shower as hairs come out more easily.
  • To reduce redness, alternate between your right and left brow every few plucks. This also eliminates swelling and ensures that your brows look uniform.
  • To avoid the pain of plucking, apply Anbesol, or LMX (available at drugstores) to your brows for a few seconds to numb the skin before tweezing.

Eye Shadow

The eyes are the windows to our soul. Because they are so expressive, they deserve some serious window treatment. The more you attract people with your eyes, the greater your connection.

Eyeshadow can make or break your look. As creatures of habit, we develop a routine over the years, and may not notice that our skin elasticity has changed. We may still be applying heavy eyeshadow that looks outdated.

I can always tell when the season has just begun by the so called “new look” for fall, winter, spring or summer.  Just because a color is hot for the season don’t mean it’s flattering to your skin tone. On the other hand, you may be wearing a color palette that you should have buried five seasons ago.

Aim to look current, not trendy. Consult with a professional makeup artist. Or better still, contact us for free advice.

Eyeshadow is really just an extension of your personality, so accessorize your eyes with expressive style.

Tips

  • The key to applying eyeshadow is to select colors that enhance your own eye color.
  • Think soft and pretty for this season. Eyeshadow should be natural, not noticeable, during the day.
  • A more dramatic look works best at night.
  • Apply two eyeshadows using the three step process:
    • Step One: Select the tone. Choose a warm, neutral shadow similar to your lid color like beige, taupe, off-white or skin tone.
    • Beginning with the inner corner and working outward, apply shadow to your eyelid, staying below the crease of your eye.
    • Step Two: Create the contour. For your second shadow, choose a shade darker than your base tone. This goes into the crease of your eye and adds depth.
    • Apply the darker shade to your crease, starting above the middle of your lid and working outward to both corners.
    • Be sure to blend and smudge around the edges.
    • Step Three: Use your first shadow to brighten up your brow.
      • Sweep your lightest shadow along the brow bone to highlight you eyes (just below your brows).
  • Everyone looks good using a shade of brown for contour. Shades of brown that blend with your natural skin tone always look timeless:
    • Green eyes: brown with khaki undertones
    • Blue eyes: sand or taupe color
    • Brown eyes: darker charcoal color
  • As you age, use more natural skin tone shadows that stand out from the iris of your eyes.
  • Avoid colors that contain shine or frost if you don’t want to accentuate every line, bump or irregularity.
  • The more flamboyant the eyeshadow, the more it will exaggerate imperfections.
  • The lighter the shadow on your lid (opalescent whites), the more difficult it will be to cover imperfections.
  • Purple undertones in shadow and eyeliner make green eyes look greener.
  • Warm browns and oranges make blue eyes look bluer.
  • If your eyes are hooded, use products that open up the area and enlarge the eye. Brighten your entire under-eye area with concealer. Use smoky eye shadow to put a smudged line on the top lid.
  • If your eyes are deep-set, use flesh colored shadow over your lid. Use a contrasting eye shadow in your socket to define your eyelid further. Keep sparkly eyeshadow to a minimum as it will make your eyes recede further.
  • If your eyes are lined, use an invisible line smoother on your crow’s feet. Then use a natural eyeshadow to smooth out your lids.
  • If you have bumpy eyelids or crow’s feet or droopy lids, avoid thick eyeliner, strong pigmented eye shadows and complicated color layering on your lid.
  • Always accent your eyeshadows with eyeliner and mascara. This will help you express your dramatic edge or bring out your natural beauty.
  • Apply our primer on the lids before you put on shadow. This prep step will smooth the skin surface and prolong the eyeshadow’s performance.
  • Invest in a fabulous eyelash curler like Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler to frame your eyeshadow.
  • Add extra loose powder right your eyes to catch falling debris while you’re applying shadow and mascara. You can just brush it away when you are finished.

Dust Dazzlers

Celebrate this festive season with sparkles and glamour. Use these magical powders for highlight and shimmer on eyes, cheeks and décolletage.

True color enhanced in shimmer textured powder.

Colors: Gold Dust & Sterling Silver

Smart Tips:
Turn heads with a daring evening effect. These subtle shimmer finishes in gold dust or sterling silver are eye-catching.

  1. Use a blush brush to sprinkle lightly on your chest and décolletage.
  2. Use a regular brush to lightly dust over your eyelids and the top of your cheekbones.
  3. Don’t rub off excess powder. Instead, dust it off with a clean brush.

Create-A-Liner

This unique liquid transforms any shadow into eyeliner. It’s an economical way to extend your makeup line without investing tons of money.

  • This takes any colored eyeshadow and turns it into water-resistant eyeliner.
  • You can also use it with your blush to create a lip-liner
  • When you use our CREATE-A-LINER, follow these steps
    • Dip your brush into the liquid.
    • Next, take your brush and put it into your eyeshadow palette.
    • Take enough color onto your brush.
    • You now have a waterproof liquid eyeliner.

Eyeliner

When I think back to beautiful actresses, Elizabeth Taylor comes to mind. I recall watching her in Cleopatra and remember her exaggerated thick eyeliner that extended well beyond her eye - very cat-like. However, that was for the big screen, not for everyday wear. Today, think current. Minimalistic color palettes are the way to go for the corporate woman.

Tips

  • Simplify your life. Update your look by investing in our new gel eyeliner for easy application. This will stay throughout the day and evening.
  • Whether using our gel eyeliner or pencil, apply a thin line, which is always attractive. Learn to smudge for a softer look. Nothing ages you more than thick black eyeliner or eyeliner that you forgot to blend.
  • Avoid thick eyeliner if your eyelids are bumpy, if you have prominent crow’s feet, or have excess hooded skin above the eyelashes.
  • You can also substitute eyeshadow for eyeliner, using one of our natural earthy color swith our Create-a-Liner.
  • Line the top lid close to the lashes and then smudge it to look as natural as possible.
  • You can add a softly smudged thin line under the lower lid for a stronger look, but be careful not to overdo it, or bring attention to puffy eyes.
  • Extend your eyeliner up and out on the upper lid, to draw the eye up and create an age-defying eye lift.
  • Avoid ending the line in a tail.

Tips to apply:

  • Start at the corner of the eye and draw inward. Stop more than halfway for a larger look. Use the point where your eye color ends as your stop sign.
  • Draw a second line in the area between the lashes with a dark pencil. Just lift your top eyelid and line the area between lashes with a dark pencil.
  • Resist lining the rim of your inside bottom eye. This look is outdated. If you insist, choose a softer color instead.
  • To visually lift droopy eyes, draw a line slightly upwards above your eye lashes (about a centimeter) and then bring it down to the lash line.

Mascara

Years back, I remember watching an emotional Tammy Faye Baker being interviewed on TV with black mascara dripping down her face. It made me cautious of overdoing mascara. However, mascara is essential and a little goes a long way. I realized that the application determines the results. I know that you wouldn’t leave your home without styling your hair. Look at your lashes in the same way. Most of us don't have the naturally full, long, curvy lashes we lust for. That’s where mascara comes in. Why is mascara so magical? One stroke of mascara can make all the difference between looking tired and awake. It frames your eyes for greater impact. Both short and fine lashes are enhanced by the magical effects of mascara. In addition, mascara darkens and extends the tips of lashes, making your lashes longer. It separates each lash and adds curl without an eyelash curler. And it provides soft natural volume that frames your eyes, similar to a picture frame. Read on to bat your best lash!

Tips

  • For a natural, open-eyed look, lashes should be gently accentuated.
  • For a defined look, each lash should be emphasized yet not exaggerated.
  • Use a metal eyelash comb to separate lashes that clump.
  • For drama, create allure with intense length, fullness or curve.
  • A very black shade works for everyone.
  • If you have light eyelashes and don’t want too much contrast, try shades of brownish black or soft black.
  • Remember the four step process:
    • Step One: Always start at the base. Position your mascara horizontally against the base of your upper lashes and brush upward with a slight zig-zag motion right from the root to the tip. This will help make your lashes look longer. By drawing the brush out to the tips, you can even apply three or four coats without lashes sticking together. You want to make sure that your lashes are evenly coated by working from the outer lash to the inner lash. Clumps only happen when you randomly apply mascara.
    • Step Two: Repeat step one on the lower lashes, but brush downward.
    • Step Three: Gently comb lashes with a professional lash comb for perfect separation.
    • Step Four: Check for mascara clumps before you put your mascara comb away.
  • For a fuller look, apply one coat; then with a dusting of baby powder, lightly coat the lashes with your index finger; follow through with another coat of mascara.
  • Never pump the wand to remove mascara on the brush. Over-pumping forces air into the tube. This makes the mascara thick and sticky, and dries it out more quickly.
Eyelash Curler
  • To brighten your eyes, curl the upper lashes. This prevents your mascara from hitting your lower lids and smudging. It opens the eye and works with tinted lashes in place of mascara.
  • Remember the five step process:
    • Step One: Tilt your head back and set the top bar of the eyelash curler on your upper eyelid, as close to the base of your lashes as possible.
    • Step Two: Use your thumb to control the bottom rubber bar of the curler. Draw the bottom rubber bar up the base of your lashes by squeezing the handle with your thumb.
    • Step Three: Press carefully to make sure you don’t pinch yourself before you close firmly.
    • Step Four: Hold for several seconds; the longer the hold, the firmer the curl.
    • Step Five: Release and reclose the curler several times, rather than giving it one big crimp, for greater effect.
  • Curl your eyelashes after your mascara dries to get maximum lift.
  • Don’t curl your lashes right out of the shower because, like your hair, they have to be dry or they won’t curl.
  • Replace the rubber in your eyelash curler regularly.
  • Avoid heated eyelash curlers as you can burn your lashes.
  • For evening wear, if you want to apply false lashes, don’t use a single strip. Instead, apply a few small clusters of false lashes for a more natural look. These are called lash extensions. Avoid a full ledge of lashes, which looks fake. Apply a few lashes at the outer corners of your eyes. Five clusters per eye are sufficient.
  • If you can’t wear mascara, have your lashes tinted and use an eyelash curler.

Lash Volumizer Mascara

Capture all eyes. Make your lashes the center of attention with this lengthening and thickening mascara. This special formula thickens by 30%. Enjoy full, soft, thick lashes without the brittle feel. Ditch your fake eyelashes for the real thin

Lipslick

Lips are enhanced by shine, so always have at least one gloss in your purse. The beauty of gloss is that you can apply it without a mirror. It’s so easy to wear and enhances every look. Even on natural lips, lipgloss adds a special touch. We call our product LIPSLICK for impact and beauty.

Tips

  • When choosing a color, think about how much coverage you want. Even if you want a natural look, you can still apply our LIPSLICK sparingly.
  • A shade with sheer coverage will look dark in the tube but leaves just a tint of color.
  • To wear Lipslick alone, start at the center of your lip, working toward the outer edges. Blend toward, but don’t touch, the border of your lip. Use the same technique for your lower lip.
  • Don’t line your lips with a dark lip pencil and fill it in with lighter Lipslick. If you’re using a lip liner to give the illusion of a fuller lip, match the color exactly or even go lighter than your natural lip color.
  • Wearing gloss over lipstick helps your lips appear fuller. Dab a bit of Lipslick on the center of your upper and lower lips.
  • For evening drama, try a deep shade with shimmer.
  • To prepare your lips for coverage, exfoliate and moisturize. Follow this procedure, just as when you moisturize your face. Lipslick or lipstick looks very unattractive when applied to a cracked, dry or peeling surface. Purchase a lip exfoliator that moisturizes as well. Lip balms are good moisturizers. Remember to apply them before bedtime.
  • To avoid gloss or lipstick from bleeding into your lines, dot concealer along the edge of your upper lip (or wherever you have lines). You can use products that have been designed specifically for this purpose. They usually have a wax-like feeling. You can also purchase a nude-colored pencil which is soft in texture. Line the upper lid and blend. This will serve as a barricade to deter lipsticks and gloss from running.
  • The darker the lip shade, the more prominent the dark shadows under your eyes. The darker the color, the thinner your lips appear. Darker lips also highlight lines around your mouth, a sagging jaw line, or discolored teeth.
  • Remember that anything on your lips must be reapplied regularly. Look in the mirror every two to three hours, particularly after a meal. Touch ups are a necessity. Lip liner that remains after the lip gloss or lipstick disappears creates a clown-like appearance.
  • Pale lips generally need a slightly deeper lip liner to provide some contrast to the skin. Use a lip brush to blend the liner into the lip color to create a smooth transition.
  • Lips recede as we get older. Try lining the lips just slightly above the natural lip line.
  • Avoid frosted lipsticks as they exaggerate wrinkles. Stick with cream or matte lipsticks, or to be on the safe side, purchase one of the many Rosalind Collection® Lipslicks. It’s easy to put on, and will create a softer, more youthful appearance.

Lip Liner

For that soft and creamy look for your lips!  For fuller lips, apply the liner just above the outline of your top lip.  Before applying your LipSlick, smooth the liner across your lips with the lip brush to keep the color staying longer.

Brushes

Brush care savvy:
To extend the life of your brushes, establish a routine for their care. The more attention you give to upkeep, the longer your brushes will last. Keep them in a case so they maintain their shape. Our 10 piece brush set covers all your needs - from applying gel liner to applying blush evenly. Brushes will last for several years if you follow the advice below. Remember that you get what you pay for. Look at this purchase as an investment.

  • Brushes carry bacteria, so wash your brushes regularly to keep bacteria from spreading. This will also extend the life of the bristles.
  • Like hair brushes, makeup brushes have a life span. A makeup brush should be replaced when you notice a change in texture, loss of hair, or stale aroma.
  • Brushes you use for liquid and cream makeup, such as lip color, foundation, concealer, and cream eye shadow should be washed daily. Wash the rest of your brushes once a week, or at least every two weeks.
  • First, wet the brush head, lather well with shampoo and rinse with warm water. Follow with a conditioner, and rinse again. Lay flat on a towel to dry. The brushes will dry in about three minutes. Wipe your brushes with antibacterial wipes after each use.
